As a sedimentary crystal, the kambaba jasper consists of microcrystalline quartz interlaced with some stromatolites. These are ancient fossilized colonies that were created by blue-green algae or cyanobacteria and other primeval microorganisms.

Kambaba jasper is also called many names. It is sometimes known as the Green Stromatolite Jasper, Crocodile Jasper or Crocodile Rock. It also has several spelling variations for its name including Kabamba, Kabamba, Cumbamba and Bambamba.

Because of the colour similarities, kambaba jasper is sometimes confused with the Nebula stone. Although these two are very different in places of origin and composition.
